Door lock stuck and the key won't turn — causes and fix

Before you force the door or rush to call a locksmith: most 'stuck lock' and 'key won't turn' cases are solved by a quick clean and lubricate, or by realigning the latch with the strike plate. Work through these steps calmly and in order. The one rule that matters most: never force the key, because a forced key snaps off inside the lock and turns a five-minute job into a locksmith call.

The problem

The key goes in stiffly or won't seat fully, or it goes in but turns roughly, or it turns halfway and stops. Sometimes the lock works with the door open but jams when you close it, or it opens from one side but not the other. Occasionally the key turns freely but the latch itself doesn't move.

Likely causes

A cylinder full of dust and grit (the most common cause here)

Inside the lock are small spring-loaded pins that have to line up when you turn the key. In dusty cities like Amman or Riyadh, fine dust works its way into the cylinder over time and cakes up, so the pins bind. The result is a key that turns roughly or stops halfway. This is the most common case — and it's fixed by cleaning and a graphite lubricant.

A worn key — a copy of a copy

Every time a key is cut from a copy of a copy, a little precision is lost from the teeth. After a few generations the key no longer matches the pins exactly, so it turns stiffly or not at all. Try the original key — the very first one that came with the lock. Very often the problem simply disappears with it.

The latch misses the strike plate (the door has dropped or swollen)

Over time a door sags on its hinges, or swells with coastal summer humidity, so the latch no longer lines up with the hole in the strike plate on the frame. You find yourself having to pull or lift the door to get the key to turn. The fault isn't in the lock at all — it's the alignment.

A seized or rusted mechanism

Older locks, and locks on external doors exposed to rain and damp, rust inside, so the latch moves stiffly and the key turns hard. Lubrication helps a lot. But if the rust is well advanced inside a buried mortise lock, it usually needs replacing rather than saving.

A broken spring or a worn-out cylinder

If the key turns completely freely with no resistance but the latch doesn't move at all, there's usually a broken internal spring or a cylinder that has worn out inside. This isn't a cleaning job — it needs the cylinder or the whole lock replaced, and that's usually a locksmith's work.

Fix it — step by step

  1. Try the original key, not the copyFirst of all, dig out the original key that came with the lock — the one with the cleanest teeth — and try it. If it turns easily, your problem is the worn copy, not the lock. Cut a fresh key from the original, not from the copy.The original is often slightly heavier with crisper teeth. Cheap thin copies wear out fastest.
  2. Lubricate the cylinder with graphite or a dry PTFE sprayPuff a little graphite powder, or spray a dry PTFE (Teflon) lubricant, into the keyway. Insert and withdraw the key a few times to spread it, then wipe off the excess. This frees the dust-bound pins and brings the turn back to smooth.No graphite to hand? Rub the key teeth with a pencil (the lead is graphite) and work it in and out — a temporary fix, but it works.
  3. Don't use oil or WD-40 as a long-term fixAvoid ordinary oil and WD-40 as a lasting fix inside the lock. Oil attracts dust and, over time, turns into a sticky paste that clogs the cylinder further — so the problem comes back worse within weeks. Graphite and PTFE are dry and don't trap dust.If someone already sprayed WD-40 and the lock has gone gummy, flush it with a little rubbing alcohol, let it dry, then lubricate with graphite.
  4. Check the door and latch alignment against the strike plateOpen the door and look at the latch tongue and the strike plate on the frame. Now close it and watch: does the latch drop cleanly into the strike hole, or does it catch the edge above or below? Bright rub-marks or scratches on the strike plate mean the door has dropped or swollen and the alignment is off.Mark where the latch lands with a pencil on the strike plate while it's shut — you'll see exactly how far off the hole it is.
  5. Adjust or reposition the strike plateWith a screwdriver, loosen the strike-plate screws slightly (not all the way) and shift the plate up or down, whichever way the latch is catching, to open a wider path, then retighten. If the door has sagged, sometimes just tightening the top hinge screws lifts it back into place and fixes the alignment.If the offset is small, filing the strike hole a touch wider is easier than moving the whole plate.
  6. Work the key gently while lubricating — and never force itAfter lubricating and adjusting, insert the key and turn it with light, steady pressure while giving it a small wiggle left and right until you feel it find its seat and turn. If you feel strong resistance, stop — don't crank it, and never put pliers on the key head.The golden rule: a forced key snaps inside the lock, and then you need a locksmith. Patience is far cheaper.

When to call a professional

Stop and call a locksmith if: the key has snapped off inside the cylinder; the cylinder itself is broken or spins completely freely without moving the latch; or the lock is a mortise type buried in the door and its internal mechanism is broken or rusted. These need the lock removed and internal parts swapped with specialist tools — a locksmith does it without wrecking the door. Should I use oil or WD-40 on a stuck lock?

Not as a lasting fix. WD-40 and oils free a lock for a day, but they attract dust and turn into a sticky paste that clogs the cylinder worse within weeks — especially in dusty areas. The right choice is graphite or a dry PTFE spray, which don't trap dust and last far longer. If a lock has gone gummy from old WD-40, flush it with alcohol and re-lubricate with graphite.

The key snapped off inside the lock — what now?

First, don't push it in further. If part of the broken key is sticking out, try to grip it with fine needle-nose pliers, or slide a small jigsaw/coping blade alongside it to hook the teeth and draw it out. If it's flush or won't come easily, don't force it — call a locksmith. Rough attempts drive it deeper and damage the cylinder.

The key turns but the latch doesn't move — why?

That points to a broken internal spring, or a worn or disconnected link between the cylinder and the latch. It isn't a lubrication issue — the cylinder is turning but no longer drives the mechanism. It usually needs the cylinder or the whole lock replaced, which is a locksmith's job.

The lock works with the door open but jams when I close it — why?

That's almost always an alignment problem, not a lock problem. The door has dropped on its hinges or swollen with humidity, so the latch no longer meets the strike hole cleanly. How often should I lubricate the locks at home?
