Electric oven won't heat — causes and fix

Before you pay a call-out fee: half of all 'my oven won't heat' cases come down to something simple — the clock or timer left on auto so the oven refuses to start, a tripped breaker, or a heating element that has burnt out and is visible to the eye. Work through these steps in order. If it turns out to be a burnt element on a plug-in model you can often swap it yourself, but any job touching the internal wiring, thermostat or control board is a qualified electrician or appliance-tech job.

The problem

You switch the oven on and set a temperature, but it stays cold or heats very weakly — or food cooks on one side and stays raw on the other. Sometimes the grill (broiler) works but the bake element is dead, or the other way round. And sometimes the oven doesn't respond at all, as if it's off, even though it has power.

Likely causes

A burnt-out heating element (bake or grill)

The heating element is a metal rod that glows red as current passes through it. Over time it burns out: you'll see a clear break, a blister or bulge, a burnt black spot, or simply no red glow when you switch it on. If the lower (bake) element is gone, the oven heats weakly and food won't cook from below; if the upper grill element is gone, the grill dies but baking still works.

The clock or timer left on 'auto' (the most common cause, and the easiest fix)

Most ovens have a clock or timer, and when it's set to 'auto' or 'timed' (a delayed programmed start) the oven refuses to heat now — it's waiting for the programmed time. Very often a power cut resets the clock and drops the oven back into auto without you knowing. It needs to be on 'manual' (a little hand symbol, or a pot / manual-on icon), not auto.

A tripped breaker or blown fuse

An electric oven draws a high current and usually sits on its own breaker in the panel. If that breaker has tripped, or a fuse on the oven circuit has blown, the light and display may still work but nothing heats — or the oven is completely dead. With the frequent power dips common across the region, a tripped breaker is a real possibility.

A faulty thermostat or temperature sensor

The thermostat (or the sensor on newer models) reads the oven's temperature and switches the element off and on to hold the set point. If it fails, the oven may not heat at all, may overheat and burn food, or may give wildly uneven heat. This isn't a part you swap from outside — it needs internal removal and wiring, so it's a technician's job.

A failed control board (on newer models)

Modern digital ovens have an electronic board that manages the heating. If the board fails, the display may light up but never send the heat command to the element, or it throws an error code (usually 'F' plus a number). Diagnosing and replacing the board is appliance-tech work — don't open it up yourself.

Fix it — step by step

  1. Confirm the oven has power, and check the breakerSee whether the light or display is working. Go to the panel and find the oven breaker — if it's tripped, reset it. On a freestanding oven with a plug, check the plug is seated properly and test the socket with another appliance to confirm it's live.If the breaker trips again every time you switch the oven on, don't keep resetting it — that's a short circuit and needs a technician, not just a routine reset.
  2. Make sure the clock is on 'manual', not 'auto'Look at the oven's clock or timer display. If you see an 'A' or 'AUTO', or a small flashing clock, the oven is set for a programmed start — you need to return it to manual mode (the hand or pot symbol). Check your oven's manual if you're unsure. Usually you press the mode button until the auto symbol clears.If the clock is flashing or reads 0:00, a power cut has confused it — reset the time, clear any program, and the oven very often heats again straight away.
  3. Set it to Bake and watch whether the element glows redSwitch the oven to Bake at a high temperature and watch through the glass, or after it's warmed up a little. Within a few minutes the lower element should glow red evenly along its whole length. If it never glows, or only part of it glows, that points to a burnt element.Don't keep opening the door — you let the heat out and think it isn't heating. Watch through the door glass.
  4. Cut the power and inspect the element by eyeTurn the oven off and isolate it fully — at the breaker or by pulling the plug — and wait for it to cool. Then inspect the heating element up close: look for a clear break, a blister or bulge, or a burnt black spot. A healthy element is a smooth, even rod with no deformities.Photograph the element from every angle first — it helps if you need to order a replacement part or ask a technician.
  5. Check whether only Bake fails, or only the grillTry Bake (lower) on its own, then the grill/broiler (upper) on its own. If one works and the other doesn't, that confirms the dead one is the burnt element, rather than a general power fault or a control board.This is the fastest way to isolate the cause: if the grill glows and Bake doesn't, the lower element is the problem — and vice versa.
  6. Make the callIf one element is clearly burnt out and your model uses a plug-in element (held by two screws and pushed into a socket), you can order an element matching your exact model number and swap it with the power off. But if the oven is completely dead despite having power, there's an error code, or the element is wired into the oven wall, stop and call a technician.When you call, tell them exactly what you checked (clock, breaker, which element is dead) — it saves you the diagnostic fee and lets them bring the right part.

When to call a professional

Stop and call an appliance technician or qualified electrician if: the breaker trips every time you switch the oven on (a short circuit); the oven is completely dead despite having live power and the clock on manual; an error code appears (F + a number); you suspect the thermostat, sensor or control board; or the element is wired into the body of the oven rather than a plug-in socket. Swapping a plug-in element is easy, but any work on the internal wiring, thermostat or board is specialist work — the oven runs on a high current and a mistake risks shock or fire. And never keep running an oven whose breaker trips repeatedly.

The whole oven is dead even though the house has power — what do I check first?

Two things first: the oven's breaker in the panel (reset it if tripped), and the oven clock (make sure it's on manual, not auto). A lot of 'dead oven' cases come down to a power cut confusing the clock and dropping the oven into a programmed mode. Reset the time, clear any program, and it often comes back to life.

The oven heats from the top but not the bottom — why?

But if the element is wired into the body of the oven, or the oven is digital with a sensor and board, leave it to a technician — it runs on a high current and a mistake is dangerous.

Food cooks unevenly or the temperature is wrong — is that the element?

Not necessarily. If both elements glow correctly but the temperature is off or uneven, it's usually the thermostat or sensor reading wrong. Confirm with an oven thermometer: put it inside, set 180°C and compare. A large, consistent gap points to the thermostat, and that's a technician's job.
