Fridge making a loud noise — what's causing it
Before you decide the fridge is dying: most new noises come down to something simple — dust on a fan, an unlevel cabinet, or an item vibrating on top. The trick is to locate the sound first. Listen for where it's coming from, then work through these steps to the cause. And if a loud noise turns out to be the compressor, you'll know it's a technician's job, not yours.
The problem
The fridge is louder or stranger than usual: a steady buzz or hum, a rattle, an occasional knock, or a gurgling sound like water boiling. Sometimes the noise comes from the back-bottom, sometimes from inside the freezer, and it often rises when the fridge kicks in and settles when it switches off.
Likely causes
A dusty or obstructed condenser fan (back-bottom)
Underneath the fridge at the back there's a small fan that cools the coil and compressor. When dust and lint build up on it — which happens fast in the dusty air of Amman or Riyadh, and faster if you have a pet — it starts to buzz, rattle or bind. The noise rises when the compressor runs and stops when it cuts out.
The evaporator fan (inside) hitting ice
Inside the freezer, behind the back panel, there's a second fan that circulates the cold air. If ice builds up around it because of a defrost fault, the fan blades start clipping the ice — so you hear a clicking or a sharp squeal that gets louder when you open the freezer door. That's a sign of a defrost problem, not just dust.
Compressor hum — normal vs failing
The compressor (the black canister at the back-bottom) makes a low hum or buzz while it runs, and that's completely normal. But if the hum becomes very loud, turns into a metallic knock, or you hear a click followed by silence (it tries to start and cuts out), the compressor or its relay is usually on the way out — and that is strictly a technician's job.
Not level, touching the wall, or items rattling on top
If the fridge is tilted or a foot isn't planted firmly, the compressor's normal vibration turns into knocking and rattling. The same happens if it's pressed against the wall or a cabinet at the side or back — the vibration transfers into the woodwork and gets amplified. And the simplest cause of all: a plate, some jars or a box of fruit vibrating on top.
Drain pan or tubing rattle — and gurgling refrigerant
Under the fridge there's a pan that catches defrost water; it can rattle and buzz with the vibration. Thin copper tubes can also touch each other and hum. As for a gurgling or bubbling sound — like water simmering or trickling — that's refrigerant moving through the pipes. It's completely normal and not a fault at all, especially just after the fridge switches off.
Fix it — step by step
- Locate the source firstStand still and listen carefully: is the noise coming from the back-bottom (compressor / condenser fan), from inside the freezer (evaporator fan), or from on top and around it (something vibrating)? Move your ear carefully to each area, and open the freezer door — if the noise gets louder when you open it, it's coming from inside.Roll a sheet of paper into a cone and hold it to your ear like a stethoscope — it helps you pin down the direction much more precisely.
- Clear items off the top and testBefore any dismantling: move anything sitting on top of the fridge — plates, jars, bowls, boxes — and pull them away from the sides. A surprising number of 'annoying noise' cases end right here, in a second.Even a magnet or a sheet of paper trapped between the fridge and the wall can rattle and buzz. Give the fridge a gentle rock with your hand and see if anything is loose.
- Unplug it and pull it outPull the plug (not just the off button), then ease the fridge forward until you can reach the back. When you push it back, leave at least 5-10 cm of gap from the wall — a fridge shoved against the wall transfers vibration and runs the compressor hot.Slip a piece of cardboard or a towel under the front feet so it slides out easily without scratching the tiles.
- Clean the condenser coil and fanAt the back-bottom you'll find a black grille or coil and a fan. With a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment, lift off the dust and lint from the coil and the fan blades. Spin the fan by hand — it should turn freely with no rubbing. Remove any hair or thread wound around the spindle.This clean alone lowers the noise, saves power and extends the compressor's life — do it every 6 months in a dusty climate.
- Level it on the floorPut the fridge back and make sure all four feet are planted with none hanging. Screw the front feet up or down until it sits solidly — ideally tilted very slightly back so the door swings shut on its own. Rock it with your hand: it should not move.Use a spirit level or even a phone level app. A single loose foot causes a knock that keeps you up all night.
- Check for ice around the inside fanIf the noise came from inside the freezer (a clicking or squeal that rises when you open the door), empty the freezer and look at the back panel — if there's heavy ice build-up or the fan is clipping ice, that's a defrost problem. You can unplug the fridge for 24 hours to let it thaw as a test, but if the ice returns quickly the defrost system has failed → technician.A little frost is normal. But a thick wall of ice on the back panel means the defrost heater or timer isn't working.
- Listen to the compressor and make the callAfter cleaning and levelling, plug it back in and listen. A steady low hum or buzz = normal. Gurgling or bubbling after it cuts out = normal (refrigerant). When to call a professional
Call a fridge technician if: the hum becomes very loud or turns into a metallic knock from the compressor; you hear a repeated click-then-silence (the compressor trying to start and cutting out — usually the relay or overload); ice keeps re-forming quickly around the inside fan after you've thawed it (a defrost-system fault); or there's an obvious noise from a failing internal fan motor. And never try to open the sealed cooling circuit or swap a mains-wired fan motor yourself — those involve mains power, a stored charge and refrigerant under pressure, and are strictly a specialist's job.

Which fridge noises are normal and nothing to worry about?
A modern fridge makes plenty of normal sounds: a soft hum from the compressor while it runs, gurgling or bubbling (refrigerant moving through the pipes) especially after it cuts out, faint ticking as plastic expands and contracts with temperature changes, and sometimes a dripping sound (defrost water running into the pan). All of these are completely normal.
My fridge started humming loudly after I moved it to a new spot
Almost certainly it's not level, or it's touching the wall or a cabinet, or the floor is uneven. Level all four feet, leave 5-10 cm of clearance from the wall on every side, and make sure nothing is touching the back. The noise usually disappears at once. It will also run harder for the first day or two after a move while it re-cools — that part is normal.
Why is there a rattling or clicking from the back-bottom of the fridge?
The most common culprit is the condenser fan: dust and lint on the blades, or something wound around the spindle, so it rubs and rattles. Unplug the fridge and clean it with a brush. If the noise remains after cleaning and the fan turns stiffly, the motor needs replacing — that's technician work.
The noise gets louder when I open the freezer door — why?
That points to the internal evaporator fan. When you open the door the sound insulation is gone and you hear it clearly. If it's a squeal or a clicking, ice is usually clipping the blades because of a defrost problem. Empty the freezer, unplug the fridge for 24 hours, and if the ice returns quickly, call a technician.
The fridge makes a sound like water boiling or gurgling — is that normal?
Yes, entirely. That's the refrigerant moving between liquid and gas inside the pipes. You'll hear it most clearly after the compressor switches off. It has nothing to do with a fault and needs nothing done to it.
