Lights flickering or dimming — how to narrow it down safely
Flickering or dimming lights are annoying, but they aren't always dangerous. Most cases are a bulb that isn't seated properly or a cheap LED that doesn't get on with a dimmer — both you can sort yourself without opening anything. The important skill is telling an ordinary flicker apart from the kind that says 'there's a wiring problem, call an electrician now.'
The problem
Lights flicker rapidly, or dim and brighten, or flash on and off slightly. Sometimes it's just one bulb; sometimes every light in a room, or the whole house, dims together. You may notice they dim at the exact moment the AC, washing machine or water pump kicks in, then return to normal.
Likely causes
A loose or wrong bulb
The simplest and most common cause: the bulb isn't screwed fully into the holder, so the contact is poor and the light flickers. Or the bulb itself is failing, or it's the wrong type for the fitting. If only one bulb flickers, this is almost always where the problem is — and it's the easiest thing to check.
An LED that doesn't get on with a dimmer
Lots of people swapped their old bulbs for cheap LEDs but kept the same old dimmer switch. Old dimmers were built for filament bulbs, and with ordinary LEDs they cause flickering or shimmer, especially at low brightness. The fix: an LED marked 'dimmable', ideally paired with an LED-compatible dimmer.
A loose connection somewhere in the circuit
A loose or badly tightened wire at a switch, a junction box or the lamp holder makes intermittent contact, so the light flickers. This is the most dangerous cause, because a loose connection heats up and can start a fire over time. If the flicker comes with heat, a smell or a buzz — this is it, and it is strictly an electrician's job. Do not open it yourself.
An overloaded circuit
If the lights dim whenever a large appliance starts — AC, washing machine, water pump, heater — the circuit or its connection can't handle the load, or the lights share a line with heavy appliances. A brief dip at the instant of start-up is roughly normal; a clear, repeated or lasting dim is not.
A supply or neighbourhood voltage problem
Sometimes the problem isn't in your home at all. Voltage fluctuation from the grid, or a heavily loaded transformer in the neighbourhood, makes lights dim and recover — and often the neighbours see the same thing. If the whole house dims together with no internal cause, that points to the supply, and an electrician or the utility should check it.
Fix it — step by step
- Look: one light, or many?The first and most important question. If only one bulb flickers, the problem is almost certainly the bulb or its holder. If a whole room or the whole house flickers together, it's deeper — a circuit or the supply — and that leans towards an electrician's job.Glance around the house the moment it flickers: does anything else dim at the same time? That points you to the circuit.
- Make sure the bulb is screwed in fullyTurn the switch off, let the bulb cool if it was on, then gently turn it clockwise until it feels firm. A slightly loose bulb makes intermittent contact and flickers.Never turn a bulb while it's hot or lit. Switch it off at the wall first, every time.
- Swap in a known-good bulbFit a bulb you know works perfectly (from another room, say) in place of the flickering one. If the flicker stops, the bulb was the problem — done. If it still flickers with a good bulb, the issue is in the holder or the circuit — and that's where you stop taking things apart.This is the cheapest and fastest diagnostic test there is — one bulb can save you a call-out fee.
- If there's a dimmer, check LED compatibilityIf the flickering light is on a dimmer switch, look at the bulb's box: does it say 'dimmable'? If not, that's your flicker. Try an LED marked dimmable with specs suited to the dimmer.Even a dimmable bulb can flicker on a very old dimmer built for filament bulbs. The cleaner fix is a modern LED dimmer — but fitting that is an electrician's job.
- Note if it dims when a big appliance startsWatch when the lights dim. If they dip at the exact moment the AC, washing machine or water pump kicks in and then recover immediately, that brief start-up dip is usually normal. But if they stay dim, or flicker with no appliance running, or come with a smell or heat — stop here and call an electrician.Film the flicker on your phone, and note the timing. It helps the electrician a great deal and shortens the diagnosis.

When to call a professional
Stop and call a licensed electrician immediately if: the lights flicker or dim across the whole house together; there's a burning or hot-plastic smell; any switch or socket is warm to the touch or has gone yellow or black; there's a buzz or hum from a fitting or switch; or the flickering started suddenly with no obvious cause. Any of these can signal a loose connection or an overloaded circuit — and that is a fire risk. Never open a switch, socket, junction box, fitting or any wiring yourself — the wires inside the walls carry a lethal voltage, and this is strictly a licensed electrician's job, with proper tools and testing.

The lights dim when the AC starts — is that dangerous?
A small, brief dip at the instant a large appliance starts — AC, washing machine, water pump — is usually normal, because the appliance draws a high current at start-up. What matters is that it recovers immediately and doesn't happen constantly. But if the lights stay dim, flicker noticeably every time something runs, or come with heat or a smell, that isn't normal and an electrician should check the load and connections.
When is flickering actually dangerous?
It's dangerous when: the whole house flickers together, there's a burning smell, a switch or socket is warm or discoloured, or there's a buzz from a switch or fitting. Any of these can mean a loose connection that's heating up — a genuine cause of house fires. If so, stop using that circuit, switch off its breaker if you can, and call an electrician promptly.
I switched to LED bulbs and now they flicker on the dimmer — why?
Because the old dimmer was designed for filament bulbs, and most cheap LEDs aren't dimmable at all. Try a bulb marked 'dimmable'. If it still flickers, the dimmer itself is old and not LED-compatible — it needs a modern LED dimmer, and fitting that is an electrician's job.
Only one bulb flickers — what do I do?
Usually a one-minute fix: switch it off, screw the bulb fully home, and if it still flickers, swap in a known-good bulb. If the good bulb also flickers in that spot, the problem is in the holder or the wiring behind it — stop there and call an electrician.
The lights flicker after a power cut or voltage dip — is that normal?
Right after the power returns, a little instability for a few minutes while the voltage settles is common and clears on its own. But if the lights keep flickering or dimming for a long time, especially the whole house, it may be a neighbourhood voltage or supply problem — check whether the neighbours have the same issue, and call the utility or an electrician to inspect.
Can I open the switch and tighten the wire myself if it's just loose?
No. The wires behind a switch or socket carry a lethal voltage — sometimes even with the switch off — and a loose connection needs testing and proper re-termination with the right tools. That's a licensed electrician's job, and the risk is a shock or a fire. Your part stops at swapping the bulb and noticing the symptoms.
